SUMMARY:The Language of Invisibility in Three Parts: A Pop-up Exhibit and Gallery Talk by Veronica Jackson
DESCRIPTION:On Sunday\, June 10\, 2:00-4:00 pm\, Goose Creek Studio will host a pop-up exhibit and gallery talk by installation artist Veronica Jackson.  Jackson is new to the region\, but her family has long and deep roots in Bedford County.  After a career in architecture and museum exhibit design in Washington DC\, Jackson decided to reinvent herself and refocus her creative imagination while become a full-time artist.  As part of this journey and personal transformation\, Jackson returned to live on the family homestead in Bedford County\, Virginia which she shares with her mother. \n Jackson expresses her vision and personal narrative through thought provoking and cutting-edge installations.  She weaves together words\, found objects\, manufactured and newly created pieces to tell stories about race\, gender and identity.  While Jackson’ work and narrative is centered on deeply personal experiences\, these visual memoirs echo universal themes of a search for self\, identity and voice. \nFor the pop-up exhibition and gallery talk at Goose Creek Studio\, Jackson introduces viewers to three ongoing series of works. Some of these are complete\, some are works in progress and some are in the early concept phase of her creative process.   \nThe first is a series of black felt movable letterboard signs (like you might see in the lobby of a multiple use office building) which are utilized as a substrate for quotes from black women.  Using black letters on black felt\, “Language of Invisibility on Display” explores the too often overridden voice of contemporary black women in the workplace or in group decision making. \nThe second work entitled HOMELESS/TOURIST focuses on articles of clothing\, shoes\, hair\, and paint samples to explore an experience of misidentification while living in San Francisco.   \nAnd the third work uses blind debossed handmade black paper to create weekly timecards that document the working hours accumulated in 67 years of marriage\, managing a home and raising nine children.  “That’s Pop’s Money” seeks to address and expose the often-invisible value of women’s work in and around the home including child care. \n“We are excited to have Veronica Jackson’s vision as part of Bedford’s creative community\,” say Mitchell Bond\, co-owner of Goose Creek Studio.  “She brings fresh insights\, new ways of doing art and she is a master at storytelling.  It is hard to go back to old ways of seeing and doing after encountering Jackson’s work and energy\,” adds Bond.  Jackson has recently joined the Board of Directors of Bower Center for the Arts. \n Jackson received a MA in Visual and Critical Studies from California College of the Arts\, San Francisco. During her tenure at CCA her work explored identity\, agency\, and empowerment as performed by African American women in the visual landscape. Jackson’s current emphasis—a visual art practice comprised of 3D installations—critically examines and elucidates the visualization of gender and race in America\, with a specific focus on the portrayal and perception of black women in popular media of their time.  Jackson holds firm that once exposed to it\, art is a transformative experience. \nGoose Creek Studio Gallery and Custom Framing is located at 302 Court Street in Bedford.  For more information\, see  www.goosecreekstudio.com or call (540) 586-8482.
