Scheduled events include live music by Sara Ernst in the Husted Pavilion from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.\, Children’s Yoga with Kathy Graham at 11 a.m.\, 1 p.m.\, and 2 p.m.\, and a guided visit to the vernal pool with a Master Naturalist at 12:30 p.m. Throughout the day\, guests can participate in a variety of engaging activities\, including planting a majestic chestnut tree with the Virginia Chapter of The American Chestnut Foundation\, exploring astronomy with the Cloverlea Foundation\, and enjoying imaginative nature play in “Otter Space” with the Friends of the Blue Ridge Peaks of Otter Chapter. \nVisitors can also scatter wildflower seeds with Little Otter Flower Farm to support local pollinators\, meet native animal ambassadors from the Southwest Virginia Wildlife Center\, learn about amphibians with the Central Virginia Master Naturalists\, create nature-inspired art with the Bedford Central Library\, discover what hikers carry on the Appalachian Trail with the Natural Bridge AT Club\, and paint floral masterpieces with the Bower Center. Food will be available for purchase\, including lunch and sweet treats from The Raven Wood Fired Pizza and Nothing Bundt Cakes.

SUMMARY:Still Life Series at Claytor Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:This is a 4-part series of weekly art classes that will take place each Thursday in March starting from March 7 through March 28 and will be held from 2:30pm-4:30pm.\nA one time registration fee of $50 covers the entire series of classes.\nYour purchase supports our mission and allows us to steward the land and provide meaningful\, educational programs to people of all ages.\nClick Here to Register.  Registration fees are non-refundable. \nClass Information: \nMaterials:  Materials will not be provided but all you need are basic materials: a sketch pad at least 9×12” (plain white paper is fine) and a pencil. Optional materials include: 18×24 Newsprint pad\, pencils ranging from B to 6B\, kneaded eraser\, sharpener\, white eraser. (Amazon has kits that contain all.)  A drawing board large enough to accommodate the pad\, clips or a large rubber band for holding the sketch pad.  \n\n\nCourse details:  Each class will begin with warm up exercises\, such as blind contour drawings\, quick sketches\, or gesture drawings. In drawing from direct observation\, you’ll use a variety of techniques including contour lines\, positive and negative space\, perspective\, sighting of angles and measurements.  The instructor will demonstrate each activity and discuss the concepts as you practice them. Class critiques will create a community and allow students to verbalize skills learned. \nExperience: Experience not necessary! This is for beginners as well as more experienced artists. Ages 18 and up.  \n\n\n

These are only for those who arrive at their designated time slot. Hot chocolate will be available for purchase as well thanks to Nomad! \nIn addition\, there will be Claytor and Cloverlea items for purchase as gifts for the holidays\, including gift memberships.  \nYour ticket supports our mission and allows us to steward the land and provide meaningful\, educational programs to people of all ages. DESCRIPTION:The 5th annual Bedford Hike for Hope will be hosted at Claytor Nature Center\, benefiting the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.\nThis is their second year hosting the Hike\, and they are happy to have grown a bit\, along with adding elements to this year’s event.\n Please join a team\, create your own\, or make a donation.\nThe Hike will begin and end at the Cloverlea Farmhouse Memorial Gardens. There will be music\, snacks and water and coffee\, tables for our sponsors\, local organizations\, and counselors will be available on site. An Honor Bead Ceremony will be added this year\, as well as a Memorial Wall at the starting area for your posters\, pictures\, and other tributes to loved ones.\nThe Bedford Hike will have two trail options again this year. One trail is a more moderate hiking trail through wooded areas (2.5 mi)\, and the other is a flatter\, easier hike that is jogging stroller-friendly\, through open fields and woods (1.6 mi). You may also choose not to hike and simply remain in the starting area. Both trails culminate at the Reflecting Pool back at the start.\nHike participants are welcome to gather here for as long as desired (the event officially ends around noon\, but gates to the property close at 5 pm). All are invited to relax\, reflect\, make new contacts\, and share your stories with others. \nThis event is rain or shine. SUMMARY:Night Hike at Claytor Nature Center
DESCRIPTION:This program gives people the opportunity to experience the outdoors after dark and to investigate the adaptations that allow bats to be active at night. We may see and hear bats and other animals that are not often encountered in the daytime. There will be discussions about the unique habitat that bats require to thrive and the threats and competition that they face.\nThe hike will be about a mile with frequent breaks. No flashlights or cell phone lights will be permitted\, as they interfere with night vision and some of the experiments that we will be conducting. It will be dusk when we begin and dark by the time the hike concludes. This program is appropriate for children 6 and up.
