SUMMARY:Family Day at the D-Day Memorial
DESCRIPTION:The National D-Day Memorial will be a hub of activity on Saturday\, April 25\, 2026\, with free admission and events all day. \nFirst\, it is the Memorial’s annual Family Day\, where kids and adults together can get a glimpse of life at home and on the front lines during World War II. Family Day features educational displays\, demonstrations\, living historians\, children’s activities\, and special tours. Family Day hours are from 10a.m.-3p.m. \nThe Virginia Tech Corps of Cadets’ precision drill team\, known as the Gregory Guard\, will hold a performance on Gray Plaza at 10:45a.m.\, set against the Memorial’s symbolic beach tableau scene. The Memorial is one of several significant sites across Virginia selected by the Corps of Cadets to be featured in a video compilation of team performances. The performance will last only minutes\, so get there early to not miss it! \nAlso\, from 10a.m.-3p.m.\, guests can give the gift of life and support the Memorial by giving blood at an on-site bloodmobile. The Blood Connection\, the nonprofit blood provider locally for Carilion Clinic\, will donate $10 for each blood donation collected to the Memorial. As a thank you\, each donor receives $30 in rewards\, redeemable for e-gift cards. The minimum age to donate blood is 16 with parental consent. \nFree admission!

SUMMARY:81st Anniversary of D-Day Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:The 81st Anniversary of D-Day will be observed in a special ceremony at 11am at the National D-Day Memorial.\nProgram highlights include recognition of D-Day and World War II veterans\, guest speakers\, music\, and more.  Representatives from each of the Allied nations and military personnel will take part.   \nGuest speakers include Governor Glenn Youngkin and Joseph Balkoski who is an author and Historian.  \nAt the ceremony’s conclusion\, guests are invited to join in the annual procession to the “Homage” sculpture for the “You Shall Never be Forgotten” tribute and to witness the unveiling of a narrative plaque honoring the Red Ball Express in Estes Plaza. \nCeremony music will be provided by the 29th Division Band. The Enduring Freedom Honor Team band will perform at 1 p.m. on the Memorial’s west lawn. On the east lawn\, visitors can view the Faces of the Fallen and Portraits of Heroes photo exhibit throughout the day. \nAt 2 p.m.\, the public is invited to a special panel discussion remembering the late John Robert “Bob” Slaughter\, founder of the National D-Day Memorial. John Long\, National D-Day Memorial Director of Education\, will moderate “The Centennial Legacy of Bob Slaughter.” Panelists will include Bob Slaughter Jr.\, son of Bob Slaughter; Joseph Balkoski\, author and historian; Byron Dickson\, architect of the National D-Day Memorial; and April Cheek-Messier\, National D-Day Memorial President and CEO. \nMemorial hours are 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. on June 6 with free admission all day. Guided tours will begin at 1 p.m. Ceremony guests are encouraged to bring a chair. No coolers or food in the plaza. No pets (service dogs welcome). SUMMARY:Veterans Day Ceremony
DESCRIPTION:The National D-Day Memorial will host its annual Veterans Day observance ceremony on Monday\, November 11\, 2024\, at 11a.m. Veterans in attendance will be recognized during the ceremony. Admission on November 11 will be free until noon for the public and free all day for all veterans. \nMitchell Yockelson\, Keynote Speaker \nMitchell Yockelson manages the National Archives and Records Administration Archival Recovery Program\, leading investigations of thefts of historical documents and museum artifacts. Additionally\, Yockelson is a professor of military history at Norwich University and author. His latest book\, The Paratrooper Generals: Matthew Ridgway\, Maxwell Taylor\, and the American Airborne from D-Day through the Normandy Campaign was published by Stackpole in 2020. Yockelson’s next book\, The Lion and the General\, a story about the friendship between Winston Churchill and Dwight Eisenhower\, will be published in fall 2025. Yockelson will sign books following the ceremony. Books are available online at store.dday.org and in the Memorial’s gift shop. \nName Addition to Memorial Wall \nAfter years of research and verification\, the Memorial will add the name of Father Ignatius Maternowski to plaque W-48\, on the Memorial Wall. The Memorial Wall represents the world’s most complete account of D-Day fallen\, with this addition bringing the total to 4\,427 Allies killed on June 6\, 1944\, during the Normandy invasion. In his address\, Yockelson will share Maternowski’s story of valor before a special blessing of the plaque. The Memorial will also dedicate a narrative plaque honoring the 102nd Calvary Group and brick additions to the Annie J. Bronson Veterans Memorial Walk. \nWhiskey 7 Flyover \nThe ceremony will include a flyover by the famed C-46\, Whiskey 7. Among the more than 900 C-47s that flew on D-Day was Whiskey 7 (W7) part of the 9th Air Force\, 316th Troop Carrier Group\, 37th Troop Carrier Squadron. Whiskey 7 was the lead plane of the second wave of airborne paratroopers on D-Day. She carried 21 members of the 82nd Airborne\, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment\, H Company with the designated drop zone of Sainte-Mère-Église. \nGuests are encouraged to bring their own chairs. No pets (service animals welcome). A food truck will open following the ceremony. Please\, no food in the plaza.
